Hidden meaning in the Our Lady Collection

Laura Alfonso

The works in the Our Lady collection all have within them verses from the Bible, both Old and New Testament, and the Gospel of Thomas.

Each work in the Our Lady collection came together around a verse that resonated for the artist. The verse can be found in the work. These works use metallic and interference paints making their essense difficult to capture on camera. The artist uses these paints that visually seem to change depending on viewpoint to reflect an individual's ever-changing relation to and interpretation of spirituality and religion across individuals and within the individual across the lifespan.

Psalm 27:1 the work shown above has behind the lady on her knees looking up has the words The Lord Is My Light. This work in person, due to the interference blue and fine gold paints disperses light differently depending on the viewers relation to the painting.

The three other paintings in this collection, Psalm 27:8, Romans 8:31 and Gospel of Thomas, all incorporate verses into the work of art to ask the viewer to contemplate their relationship to spirituality and religion. The artist uses images of women as a commentary on the power and often more ignored relationship of women in the story of religion and spirituality.
